Bureau of Land Management to host wild horse, burro event at Ford Park

The BLM offers up to $1,000 to adopt an untrained animal. There will be 120 animals available for adoption.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Bureau of Land Management is saddling up for a two-day wild horse and burro event this week at the Ford Park Entertainment Complex.

This event will take place on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 starting at 10 a.m.

There will be 120 animals available for adoption. Adoptions will take place on April 26 from noon until 6 p.m. and April 27 from 8 a.m. until noon.

Bureau of Land Management is offering up to $1,000 to adopt an untrained animal in efforts to find every horse and burro a good home.

This incentive is offered for every animal in Beaumont, according to a release.

Staff will approve applications on site.

Here's how you can qualify:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse.
  • Homes must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water, and shelter.
  • Corral fence must meet height requirements:
    Adult horses - 6 feet
    Yearlings - 5 feet
    Burros - 4.5 feet
  • Trailers must be stock type, covered, with swing gates and sturdy walls/floors.

BLM's mission is to secure the health and safety of these animals through their Adoption Incentive Program, which was announced in July of 2021. The program includes conducting inspections of wild horses and burros within six months of the adoption date.

Adult and yearling horses, as well as burros offered at the event once freely roamed the public lands of the west.

In order to protect rangeland resources and maintain healthy herds, BLM periodically removes excess animals from the range.

The Adoption and Sale Program helps to achieve BLM's goals.

More than 280,000 animals have been placed in approved homes across the country since 1973.

The Ford Park Entertainment Complex is located at 5115 Interstate 10 Access Road, Beaumont, TX 77705. For more information, contact BLM at 866-468-7826 or visit here
