Hello,

Why are mobile operators are selling for europe "unlimited" data esims whitch are not truely unlimited?

Yallo in Swizerland writes for example:

Surf unlimited abroad with full cost control

The option is valid in the following countries:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark*, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France*, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands*, Norway*, Poland, Portugal*, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain*, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom*, United States*.

*Overseas territories are not included.
Minutes and mobile data in other countries will be charged at standard roaming tariffs (if offered from the operator).

Unlimited data volume abroad: of that, 60 GB/month with maximum possible high speed in the relevant roaming country, after that with reduced speed (download 256 kbits, upload 128 kbits).

That's usual. Unlimited data SIMs here aren't truly unlimited, my O2 plan for example only allows 25GB usage in EU and unlimited data deprioritised speeds elsewhere in the world, with 650GB fair use in the UK.

---

@Lucian not sure how Brexit is related here considering operators here makes speeds slower if you pass through a certain amount of data on unlimited plans (EE in particular) and others have limits on tethering (e.g. O2 has a clause preventing you tethering 12 or more devices regularly). Doesn't look too much difference from our plans in all honesty.

I have UK plan roaming as an addon to Voda, it's just an addon xD

Why is everyone having so much trouble roaming, it's an addon, just add it on

@insertfloppydiskhere before Brexit every operator had EU roaming and if you had an unlimited data plan then it was unlimited in the EU as well.

There was no need for these crappy esim providers that keep popping up now.
Which operators had unlimited EU roaming?

3 had "feel at home" plans before the EU Roaming Regulations came into force which brought in a Fair Usage Policy. Before the Regulation I could roam on 3 UK and 3 Ireland no problems at all, after the regulation I had SIM's blocked under new rules regarding number of days you can roam for, basically if I didn't connect to my "home" network for set period of time, they would charge for it or block my SIM.

Also the regulation states that the data roaming must be the monthly fee, divided by the EU wholesale rate, times two. Currently, the wholesale rate is €1.55+VAT per GB in 2024 so there is no way any roaming would be totally unlimited with the Regulation in force.

"Unlimited" contracts typically just get throttled to like 2Mbps. Avoid like the plague unless you are trying to save money, in which case, no complaining xD

Roaming is easy, it just costs you more than before. On Vodafone most have to buy a pass or pay £2.42 a day to use their plan in the EU:

"If your plan doesn't have inclusive roaming in our Europe Zone (Zone B), then it will cost you £2.42 a day to roam in our European destinations. You can reduce this cost with one of our European Roaming passes, available as £12 for 8 days or £17 for 15 days."

With this plan it cost nothing more magigly

I got cutoff by BT Mobile when I went over 50GB on my “unlimited” plan

Not just data cutoff, my phone was banned from registering on roaming networks. Just emergency calls only. At first I had no idea, called customer service and they told me they can reconnect me without data…

I mean, technically the data is still unlimited, you just get really slow speeds.

But this thing should be regulated, it is very deceiving indeed.

I mean, 600GB standard data and deprioritised after is still unlimited… I guarantee 99.9% of users of unlimited contracts would never even hit the limit, and 99.99% would hit it and never notice, 0.01% are knowingly abusing it to the detriment of the other users on the network, and business contracts exist to cater for their use cases

If a network decided that their infrastructure can cope without having a fair usage policy then all is fine!

Yeah, mine hasn't passed 50GB, just 26GB used last month on my unlimited contract

People unfortunately don't know how much data they really need and lots of the time, they could be fine with much less. It's only really people who use their data as mobile broadband which exceed the FUPs.
