The magazine U.S News and World Report ranks Idaho as the 5th best state in the country for preparing students for college.

The article bases its ranking on the "percentage of students that met ACT or SAT benchmarks."

Idaho, according to the magazine, has 55.2 percent of students meeting that standard.

From the article: "Students in Idaho performed far better on the writing portion of the SAT than the math section. Based on the results, around 63 percent of students were prepared for writing-related courses, while only 36 percent of students met the benchmark for math courses."

The magazine ranked Idaho 30th overall for education.

The #5 spot for college preparedness is the highest ranking Idaho received in any area by U.S. New and World Report.

“This is great news, affirming our belief that Idaho schools are doing a good job of preparing students for post-high school success, even as compared to most other states,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra said in a press release. “There’s something to be said about strategic investments in education and staying the course.”

It also ranks Idaho #6 for crime and corrections and #7 for fiscal responsibility.

Overall, the magazine ranks Idaho at the 12th best state in the country, using its criteria in a variety of categories.
