Nevada lawmakers are worried the Trump administration may undo years of protective work regarding the sage grouse, which could end up putting the bird on the Endangered Species List.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Bureau of Land Management decided last month to stop funding mitigation projects to help protect the bird's habitat.
Western states and business interests came up with those projects as part of a 2015 plan to help protect the sage grouse and business interests. The idea was to balance both interests and keep the bird off the Endangered Species List.
If the bird is listed, the rules surrounding its habitat would be stricter.
Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has expressed concern the Trump administration's decision not to support the 2015 plan would negatively impact both sage grouse populations in the state as well as Nevada's mining companies.
